The Lagos State Government has debunked rumors making the rounds on social media regarding its recent engagement with transport unions, clarifying that the move is not intended to replace the statutory responsibilities of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC).
In an official statement released to address misconceptions circulated by some bloggers , the government reaffirmed that LAGESC, in collaboration with the Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences Task Force, remains the sole legally empowered environmental enforcement arm of the State Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources.
The government acknowledged that the public transportation ecosystem,including motor parks and garages,continues to face persistent environmental challenges such as illegal trading and the indiscriminate dumping of refuse on road medians.
According to the statement, the recent dialogue with transport Unions is a strategic partnership aimed at fostering shared responsibility, improving waste management, and boosting cleanliness within transport hubs.
It explained further that the partnership does not in any way diminish, transfer, or replace the enforcement responsibilities of LAGESC and the Task Force, but a complementary initiative designed to strengthen environmental compliance, sanitation standards, and stakeholder participation in maintaining a cleaner environment across the State.
