The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) responded promptly to a tragic road traffic incident on the Apapa–Oshodi Expressway, where a dispatch rider lost his life after being struck by a fully loaded HOWO diesel tanker (RBC 38 XF) under the Cele Bridge corridor.
Preliminary reports indicate that the moving tanker violently collided with the rider’s motorcycle, trapping him underneath. The rider was pronounced dead at the scene.
LASTMA personnel at the location acted swiftly, cordoning off the area with cones and cautionary red tape to prevent secondary accidents and safeguard other commuters navigating the busy expressway. The tanker was impounded by LASTMA officials, while the driver fled the scene.
The Ijesha Police Division arrived to assume investigative responsibilities. The deceased rider, the impounded tanker, and the damaged motorcycle were handed over to the Police for a thorough investigation and subsequent prosecution. The rider’s remains were professionally secured and transported to a morgue in Yaba.
Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, General Manager of LASTMA, expressed deep condolences to the family, describing the incident as profoundly distressing. He also urged the Police to conduct a comprehensive inquiry to determine the root cause of the crash and ensure justice is served in accordance with the law.
