The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has intensified its environmental enforcement campaign by sealing several markets, shopping complexes and commercial premises in the Ikotun-Igando axis for violating the state’s environmental sanitation laws.
The enforcement exercise, carried out by LAWMA’s Project WISE West team, targeted businesses along the LASU-Igando Road corridor in Alimosho Local Government Area following repeated cases of indiscriminate waste disposal on road medians despite several warning and compliance notices.
Speaking on the exercise, LAWMA Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, said the operation followed the success of recent enforcement activities along the Yaba-Ojuelegba corridor, which led to improved environmental compliance and cleaner surroundings.
He disclosed that the authority has also begun issuing notices of intention to seal markets, shops and plazas along the Ojuelegba-Lawanson-Itire corridor as part of efforts to strengthen compliance across the state.
During the operation, LAWMA sealed Owode Market, Omo Oba Shopping Complex, Oja Oba Market, Irewolede Market, Egan Junction Market, BoA Shopping Complex, Blissful Electronics Stores, alongside several other defaulting commercial premises.
According to Gbadegesin, the affected facilities will remain sealed until they meet all stipulated environmental compliance requirements and implement adequate corrective measures.
He warned that indiscriminate dumping of refuse on road medians, drainage channels and other unauthorised locations violates Lagos State environmental laws and would continue to attract strict sanctions.
The LAWMA boss urged traders, market associations, property owners and business operators to maintain clean surroundings, patronise their assigned Private Sector Participation (PSP) waste operators and embrace responsible waste disposal practices.
He reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to combining sustained public enlightenment with strict enforcement to safeguard public health, protect infrastructure and promote a cleaner, healthier and more sustainable Lagos.
