The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has secured the support of the Rotaract Club of Ikoyi and Achiever Leo Club for its efforts to promote sustainable waste management, environmental awareness and a circular economy across Lagos State.
The commitment was made during a courtesy visit by representatives of the clubs to the LAWMA headquarters in Ijora-Olopa. The Managing Director/CEO of LAWMA, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, highlighted the Authority’s initiatives to improve waste collection, recycling and resource recovery while reducing the volume of waste sent to landfills.
Gbadegesin also highlighted plans to develop Material Recovery Facilities (MRFs) in strategic locations, including Badagry and Agbowa, to strengthen waste sorting and recycling while creating economic opportunities within the waste management value chain.
He further described the LAWMA Academy as an important platform for educating children and young people on responsible waste management, recycling and sustainable living. He noted that the initiative encourages young people to view waste as a valuable resource that can be transformed into useful products and wealth-generating opportunities.
The club representatives, led by Agboola Yussuf, President of Achiever Leo Club, and Olayori Fawaz, Vice President of Rotaract Club, Ikoyi, commended LAWMA’s environmental initiatives and pledged to collaborate with the Authority in promoting environmental awareness and building a cleaner, healthier and more sustainable Lagos.
