The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) says comprehensive measures are being implemented to improve waste evacuation across Lagos State as the government intensifies efforts to strengthen operational efficiency, expand infrastructure, and enhance environmental sanitation.
The Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of LAWMA, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, acknowledged operational challenges affecting waste evacuation in some parts of the state and assured residents that immediate, medium-term, and long-term solutions are being deployed to improve service delivery.
He explained that recent operational pressures were partly linked to difficulties in accessing disposal facilities, especially during the peak of the rainy season.
Dr. Gbadegesin noted that LAWMA’s waste-to-wealth partner, ZoomLion Nigeria Limited, has begun preliminary work to stabilise and reopen Road E at the Olusosun facility. The intervention, he said, is expected to improve access, reduce turnaround time, and enhance efficiency at the site.
He added that Transfer Loading Stations (TLSs) across the state have been resuscitated and optimised as a stop-gap measure to speed up waste evacuation from communities while infrastructure upgrades continue.
According to him, LAWMA is also supporting the acquisition of additional waste collection vehicles by PSP operators. He disclosed that 100 compressed natural gas (CNG) compactor trucks are expected to significantly boost evacuation capacity, while 10 new compactor trucks donated by the Lagos State Lottery and Gaming Board have already been deployed.
He further highlighted inter-state collaboration aimed at complementing existing disposal infrastructure and improving operational flexibility.
Dr. Gbadegesin also confirmed ongoing construction of new Transfer Loading Stations at Olusosun and Solous III, alongside other modern waste-to-resource initiatives.
He urged residents to continue patronising approved PSP operators, avoid indiscriminate waste disposal, and support government efforts toward a cleaner environment.
He assured that the current operational challenges are being addressed and that service delivery will improve progressively as interventions take effect.
