The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has announced plans to arrest and prosecute residents who patronise traders operating illegally on roads, medians, walkways, setbacks and other unauthorised public spaces across the state.
The Managing Director/CEO of LAWMA, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, disclosed this at the Authority’s headquarters, saying the measure would take effect from next week as part of renewed efforts to tackle illegal trading, indiscriminate waste disposal and obstruction of public infrastructure.
Gbadegesin explained that enforcement would no longer target only illegal traders, as buyers who patronise such markets would also be held accountable under Section 151(2) of the Lagos State Environmental Management and Protection Law 2017. He said convicted offenders could face a fine of ₦90,000, six months’ imprisonment, or both.
The LAWMA boss noted that roadside and median markets often contribute to indiscriminate waste disposal, blocked drainage channels, traffic congestion and public health risks. He therefore urged residents to patronise recognised markets and use approved waste collection channels.
He reaffirmed LAWMA’s commitment to sustained enforcement, stakeholder engagement and improved waste collection services as the state intensifies efforts to eliminate open dumping and maintain a cleaner Lagos.
