The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has warned residents against buying goods from traders operating on roads, medians, walkways, setbacks and other unauthorised public spaces across Lagos.
LAWMA Managing Director and CEO, Dr Muyiwa Gbadegesin, said enforcement would be expanded from next week to include buyers who patronise illegal roadside traders, with offenders liable to arrest and prosecution.
According to LAWMA, the Lagos State Environmental Management and Protection Law 2017 makes it an offence not only to engage in illegal street trading but also to purchase goods displayed for sale in prohibited areas.
A person convicted of the offence could face a fine of N90,000, up to six months’ imprisonment, or both.
Gbadegesin said illegal roadside markets often contribute to indiscriminate waste disposal, blocked drainage channels, traffic congestion and public health risks.
He urged residents and businesses to patronise recognised markets and use approved waste collection channels as the authority intensifies efforts to promote a cleaner and safer Lagos.
