The Lagos State Law Reform Commission (LAWRECOM) has commenced a comprehensive audit of the state’s laws to identify obsolete provisions, legislative gaps, inconsistencies, duplication and areas requiring amendment, consolidation, repeal or replacement.
The exercise, supported by the Nigerian Institute of Advanced Legal Studies (NIALS), is described as the first comprehensive statewide assessment of Lagos State laws. It is expected to produce a reliable inventory and prioritised reform framework to guide future legislative action and government decision-making.
LAWRECOM Executive Secretary, Mrs. Oluyemisi Ogunlola, said the audit will assess whether the state’s more than 250 laws have kept pace with economic growth, urbanisation, technological changes and evolving governance needs.
She added that the exercise will examine overlapping institutional mandates and identify laws that may create regulatory uncertainty or impede effective administration, with recommendations on laws to be retained, amended, consolidated, repealed or replaced.
