The Lagos State Law Reform Commission (LAWRECOM) has highlighted proposed reforms to the Lagos State Child’s Rights Law aimed at strengthening child protection and making the system more preventive and responsive.
The proposed framework includes mandatory reporting of child abuse, clearer institutional responsibilities, stronger digital safety measures, improved mental health and psychosocial support, and enhanced systems for alternative care.
LAWRECOM Executive Secretary, Mrs. Oluyemisi Ogunlola, said the draft links children’s rights with reporting duties, professional standards, inspections, complaints procedures and sanctions, with greater emphasis on identifying risks before serious harm occurs.
The reforms also seek stronger protection for children living with disabilities and improved approaches to children who come into contact with the justice system, including rehabilitation, diversion and safe reintegration.
