The Legal Practitioners’ Privileges Committee (LPPC) has suspended renowned legal practitioner, Chief Mike Ozekhome, from the rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), pending the outcome of ongoing disciplinary proceedings.
According to the LPPC, the suspension was effected pursuant to Paragraph 26(6) of the Guidelines for the Conferment of the Rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria and all matters relating to the prestigious title.
The Committee stated that the decision will remain in force until the final determination of disciplinary proceedings currently before its Disciplinary and Ethics Sub-Committee, as well as other related matters under review.
In a statement announcing the development, the LPPC explained that the suspension is aimed at preserving the integrity, dignity, and prestige associated with the rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria while investigations and disciplinary processes are concluded.
Consequently, Chief Ozekhome has been directed to refrain from presenting, describing, or holding himself out as a Senior Advocate of Nigeria throughout the period of suspension.
The Committee reiterated its commitment to maintaining the highest standards of professional conduct, ethics, integrity, and discipline within the legal profession. It further emphasized its determination to ensure that the SAN rank continues to command public trust, confidence, and respect.
Mike Ozekhome, a prominent constitutional lawyer and human rights advocate, was elevated to the rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria in 2010 as part of a group of nineteen distinguished legal practitioners admitted into the prestigious Inner Bar.
The suspension remains subject to the outcome of the ongoing disciplinary proceedings.
