The Lagos State Sports Commission (LSSC) says it will work with law enforcement agencies to address harassment and extortion of athletes and runners during training activities on roads across the state.
The Commission’s Director-General, Lekan Fatodu, gave the assurance during a courtesy visit by social media influencer and marathoner, Daniel Somande, to the Commission’s headquarters.
Fatodu appealed to motorists and other road users to cooperate with athletes using the roads for training, while reaffirming the Commission’s commitment to creating a safe and enabling environment for sports development in Lagos.
Somande used the visit to inform the Commission of plans for a 66-kilometre race scheduled to hold in Lagos before the end of the year. He also highlighted challenges faced by road athletes, particularly safety concerns and harassment by miscreants.
The marathoner, who began his career in 2020, said he has covered about 4,500 kilometres and plans to participate in the 2027 Comrades Marathon in South Africa, while seeking continued support for his career from the Lagos State Sports Commission.
