Several people have been reported trapped after a two-storey building collapsed in the Oyingbo area of Lagos in the early hours of Monday.
According to a situation report issued by the Director of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Margaret Adeseye, the incident occurred at 54 Cole Street, near Cemetery Bus Stop, around 12:20 a.m.
She said operatives from the Sari-Iganmu Fire Station were immediately deployed to the scene after receiving a distress call.
“The operation is ongoing. The collapsed structure had earlier been marked as distressed before giving way while residents were still inside,” Adeseye said.
So far, 15 people — including seven men, four women, and four children — have been rescued with various degrees of injuries. They have been taken to the Federal Medical Centre, Ebute-Metta, and the General Hospital, Odan (Lagos Island) for treatment.
Rescue operations are still underway as emergency responders continue to search for possible survivors trapped beneath the rubble.
Building collapses remain a recurring tragedy in Lagos, often linked to poor enforcement of construction regulations, the use of substandard materials, and inadequate supervision.
In November 2021, a high-rise luxury apartment under construction in Ikoyi collapsed, killing at least 42 people. Similarly, in September 2025, a four-storey building under construction in Yaba also caved in, leaving multiple casualties.
