On a special broadcast segment of The Conversation marking Eid-ul-Mawlid, prominent Islamic cleric Sheikh Ibrahim Olaniyi reflected on the birth, character, and legacy of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).
Addressing the significance of commemorating the occasion, Sheikh Olaniyi explained that while large-scale Mawlid celebrations emerged historically centuries after the Prophet’s era, the core spirit lies in expressing gratitude for his guidance and his transformative mission that brought humanity out of moral darkness.
During the interview, the Sheikh highlighted the Prophet’s foundational qualities of honesty, humility, and unwavering trustworthiness—traits earned even in his youth when he was nicknamed Al-Sadiq (the truthful) and Al-Amin (the trustworthy).
He noted that the Prophet’s leadership and family life were anchored in genuine love and exemplary behavior, pointing out that his actions spoke louder than words and served as a direct reflection of the teachings of the Quran.
Addressing contemporary religious tensions in Nigeria, Sheikh Olaniyi urged both Muslims and Christians to sheath their swords and learn from historical examples of interfaith harmony.
He referenced the early migration of persecuted Muslims to Abyssinia, where a Christian monarch, Negus, provided them safe haven and protection.
Emphasizing that God does not belong to a single sect or creed, the cleric called on religious leaders to stop preaching hate, reject extremist ideologies, and foster mutual respect across all faiths.
