Kylian Mbappé scored twice as France secured a commanding 3–0 victory over Sweden on Tuesday to book a place in the World Cup last 16, where they will face Paraguay.
The France captain opened the scoring just before half-time after a well-worked move, giving his side the lead in a dominant performance at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, watched by over 80,000 fans.
France controlled proceedings throughout, enjoying greater possession and creating several chances, with both Mbappé and Michael Olise striking the woodwork earlier in the match.
Olise played a key role in the second goal, setting up Bradley Barcola in the 53rd minute before delivering a brilliant assist for Mbappé to complete his brace and seal a comfortable win.
The goals took Mbappé’s World Cup tally to 18, moving him closer to the all-time record held by Lionel Messi, who has 19 goals.
The France skipper celebrated his first goal by embracing head coach Didier Deschamps, who recently returned to the team following a personal bereavement.
Deschamps, who will step down after the tournament, has now guided France into another knockout-stage campaign in what will be his final World Cup in charge.
France now advance confidently to the last 16, where they will face Paraguay.
