The hosts took control from kickoff, dominating possession and forcing South Africa deep into their half. Their pressure paid off early when Julian Quiñones opened the scoring in the ninth minute after capitalising on a defensive error. The game tilted further in Mexico’s favour early in the second half when South Africa were reduced to ten men following a straight red card to Yaya Sithole in the 49th minute for a dangerous challenge.
Mexico made their numerical advantage count in the 67th minute. Roberto Alvarado delivered a precise cross into the box, where Raúl Jiménez rose highest to head home the second goal and effectively seal the result.
Tensions rose late in the match as disciplinary issues escalated. South Africa were reduced to nine men after Themba Zwane was sent off following a VAR review in the 84th minute, while Mexico also ended the game with ten players after César Montes received a red card in stoppage time.
Despite the late drama, Mexico comfortably managed the closing stages, controlling possession and preventing any South African comeback.
The result gives Mexico a perfect start to their World Cup campaign and strengthens their momentum as hosts aiming for a deep tournament run.
