Manchester United have confirmed the appointment of Michael Carrick as head coach for the remainder of the season.
Carrick emerged as the leading candidate following internal discussions with the former midfielder and ex-manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, after the departure of Ruben Amorim on January 5. Club executives were impressed by Carrick’s vision and plans for the rest of the campaign, Sky Sports News understands.
United’s decision to appoint a new head coach was accelerated after their 2–1 FA Cup defeat to Brighton on Sunday, a match overseen by caretaker boss Darren Fletcher. With their FA Cup exit, the club’s sole focus for the remainder of the season will be the Premier League.
Carrick will take charge for the first time in Saturday’s Manchester derby, live on Sky Sports.
Backroom Staff Confirmed
Carrick’s coaching staff has also been finalised. Steve Holland, former England assistant under Gareth Southgate, will serve as assistant head coach. He will be joined by Jonathan Woodgate, current U21s coach Travis Binnion, and Jonny Evans, who returned to the club during Fletcher’s interim spell.

Speaking after his appointment, Carrick said:
“Having the responsibility to lead Manchester United is an honour. I know what it takes to succeed here, and my focus is now on helping the players reach the standards we expect at this incredible club.
“I have worked with a number of the players already and have followed the team closely in recent years. I have total belief in their talent, dedication and ability to be successful here.
“There is still a lot to fight for this season. We are ready to pull everyone together and give the fans the performances their loyal support deserves.”
Club Backing and Long-Term Planning
Director of football Jason Wilcox expressed full confidence in Carrick’s appointment:
“Michael is an excellent coach and understands exactly what it takes to win at Manchester United. He is ready to lead our talented and determined group of players for the remainder of the season as we continue to build towards sustained success.”
United had initially hoped to avoid changing head coaches mid-season, but poor results and concerning behaviours prompted swift action in order to preserve their objectives.
Wilcox led the process to identify a head coach for the remainder of the campaign, allowing time for a thorough search for a permanent appointment. The club prioritised candidates who understood Manchester United’s culture to minimise adaptation risks. After speaking to three candidates, Carrick was the unanimous choice.
Carrick and Wilcox jointly selected the supporting coaching staff, agreeing that Holland’s experience would add significant value, while Carrick’s strong working relationship with Woodgate made him an obvious inclusion.
Meanwhile, Darren Fletcher will return to his role with the U18s, a move fully supported by the club as part of his ongoing coaching development.
