Minister for Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, has clarified media reports that emerged following his brief appearance on Channels Television, stressing that no decision has been reached on the proposed redesign of the Scheme’s uniform.
According to the Minister, his references to Adire and Ankara during the television interview were merely illustrative, reflecting some of the ideas and proposals received during the ongoing consultation process. He emphasized that the comments should not be interpreted as an announcement that any specific fabric has been selected or approved to replace the current NYSC uniform.
He explained that the reform process is evaluating a range of options based on key considerations, including professional appearance, the promotion of a distinct national identity, durability, functionality, affordability, and the ability to inspire national pride. He reiterated that no final decision has been taken on either the fabric or the overall design.
The Minister further stated that, as with every component of the ongoing NYSC reform agenda, any eventual decision will be the outcome of extensive stakeholder engagement and guided by what best serves the interests of both the Scheme and the nation.
He urged Nigerians to remain focused on the broader objectives of the reform programme rather than allowing discussions about the uniform to dominate public discourse. According to him, the reforms are aimed at making the NYSC more responsive to contemporary realities by improving graduate employability, promoting entrepreneurship, strengthening national integration, enhancing service delivery, and facilitating a smoother transition from education into productive careers.
While acknowledging the public interest generated by conversations around the proposed uniform, the Minister noted that such discussions should not overshadow the wider transformation agenda designed to empower millions of Nigerian youths and reposition the NYSC as a stronger platform for national development.
He also expressed appreciation to Nigerians for their constructive feedback, assuring the public that every proposal under consideration would continue to be carefully evaluated with the nation’s best interests in mind.
