The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Lagos State Chapter, has honoured Motunrayo Alaka, Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Wole Soyinka Centre for Investigative Journalism (WSCIJ), as its Iconic Woman of the Month for June.
The recognition was announced in a statement jointly signed by the Chairperson of NAWOJ Lagos, Jumoke Falayi Johnson, and the Secretary, Anu M. Thomas.
The prestigious honour celebrates Alaka’s outstanding contributions to investigative journalism, her unwavering advocacy for press freedom, and her commitment to promoting gender equity and advancing the role of women in the media industry across Nigeria and Africa.
As Executive Director of the WSCIJ, Alaka has spearheaded impactful investigative journalism initiatives while championing the empowerment of female journalists. Through the Centre’s Report Women! project, she has facilitated training, mentorship, and professional support for women journalists, enabling many to advance into leadership positions within the media industry.
Speaking on the selection, NAWOJ Lagos Chairperson, Jumoke Falayi Johnson, described Alaka as a worthy recipient whose achievements reflect the ideals of the award.
“Motunrayo Alaka is not just a leader; she is a builder of people and a beacon of integrity in the media landscape. Her dedication to fostering gender equity and mentoring the next generation of investigative journalists makes her a thoroughly deserving recipient of this honour for the month of June.”
Johnson added that the NAWOJ Lagos Iconic Woman of the Month initiative is designed to celebrate exceptional Nigerian women who are breaking barriers, making remarkable contributions, and leaving lasting legacies in their respective fields.
Alaka joins an esteemed list of previous recipients, including Reverend Mother Esther Abimbola Ajayi, Dr. Abimbola Abosede Oyetunde, Mrs. Sola Salako-Ajulo, Professor Abigail Ogwezzy Ndisika, and the late Alhaja Kudirat Olayinka Abiola, who was honoured posthumously.
NAWOJ Lagos congratulated Alaka on the recognition and wished her continued success and greater impact in advancing investigative journalism, media excellence, and women’s empowerment.
