Czech tennis star Karolina Muchova has reached her first Wimbledon final after defeating former Grand Slam champion Coco Gauff in a dramatic three-set semi-final clash on Thursday.
The 10th seed saved a match point and held her composure in a tense final-set tie-break to overcome Gauff 6-2, 1-6, 7-6 (12-10) after two hours and 35 minutes of intense action on Centre Court.
Muchova will face either fellow Czech ninth seed Linda Noskova or Ukrainian 12th seed Marta Kostyuk in Saturday’s final, with the second semi-final scheduled for later on Thursday.
The victory marks Muchova’s second Grand Slam final appearance and her first since finishing runner-up at the 2023 French Open.
The 29-year-old produced a remarkable turnaround at Wimbledon after struggling in previous appearances at the tournament, having lost in the first round in each of her previous four campaigns at the All England Club.
Despite entering the match with a 1-6 record against Gauff in their previous meetings, Muchova continued her recent dominance over the American, having also defeated the two-time Grand Slam champion in Stuttgart earlier this year.
“It sounds really nice to be in the final. It was such a big fight. You are up and down, no time to think, but it was very nerve-wracking,” Muchova said after the match.
The Czech player’s achievement comes after years of battling injuries that interrupted her career progression. She also revealed that managing a grass allergy with medication, sprays and eye drops had been part of her Wimbledon challenge.
Once considered uncomfortable on grass courts, Muchova has now transformed her fortunes at the All England Club and moved within one victory of claiming her first Wimbledon title.
