The Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) says more than N267 billion in previously released intervention funds for basic education remain unutilised in state accounts.
UBEC Executive Secretary, Dr. Aisha Garba, disclosed this at the commission’s 30th Quarterly Meeting with Executive Chairmen of State Universal Basic Education Boards in Asaba, Delta State.
She also revealed that more than N65 billion in counterpart funding remains unused, urging state governments to move beyond accessing education funds and ensure they are effectively deployed to improve learning outcomes.
Garba stressed that education resources would have little impact if they remain in government accounts, calling on states to strengthen their capacity to plan, implement and monitor education projects.
The meeting, themed “Repositioning Basic Education in Nigeria to Optimise Investment and Impact,” focuses on improving teaching, learning and access to quality basic education.
Meanwhile, Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, said his administration considers education a major pillar of its MORE Agenda, highlighting investments in classrooms, school facilities, teacher training, sanitation and technology-driven learning.
The governor disclosed that more than 302,000 pupils are enrolled in Delta’s public basic schools, with over 187,000 benefiting directly from government interventions.
