The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has alerted Nigerians to the recall of Mivacron and Nimbex injections following safety concerns.
In a statement posted on its official X handle on Monday, NAFDAC said the affected products were manufactured by Aspen Pharmacare Asia Limited. The recall followed safety issues raised by the Hong Kong Department of Health.
According to the agency, one batch of Mivacron Injection 0.2 per cent and five batches of Nimbex Injection 2mg/mL are involved in the recall. NAFDAC explained that the action was taken as a precaution after the manufacturer identified potential quality defects.
“The recall was made as a precautionary measure due to potential quality issues identified by the manufacturer,” the agency said.
NAFDAC revealed that investigations uncovered lapses in the manufacturer’s manual visual inspection process, noting that not all glass particles in the ampoules may have been detected. This discovery prompted a voluntary market recall of the affected batches.
The injections, which contain mivacurium and cisatracurium respectively, are prescription medicines commonly used as adjuncts to general anaesthesia.
NAFDAC advised healthcare professionals and members of the public to report any suspected substandard or falsified medicines to the nearest NAFDAC office or through its e-reporting platforms on its official website.
Nestlé Infant Formula Safe — NAFDAC
In a related development, NAFDAC reassured Nigerians that all Nestlé infant formula products approved for sale in Nigeria are safe for consumption.
The agency clarified that the products were not affected by the recent voluntary recall announced by Nestlé UK involving specific batches of SMA Infant Formula and Follow-On Formula distributed in over 50 countries.
According to a statement signed by NAFDAC Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, the recalled products were UK batches withdrawn as a precaution due to the possible presence of cereulide, a heat-resistant toxin produced by certain strains of Bacillus cereus, which can cause nausea and vomiting.
“These affected batches were not registered by NAFDAC and are not authorised for distribution in Nigeria,” the statement said.
NAFDAC further confirmed that the SMA products sold in Nigeria are manufactured at Nestlé’s Tuas Factory in Singapore and are duly registered with the agency. These include SMA GOLD 1 (NAFDAC Reg. No. B1-2783), SMA GOLD 2 (NAFDAC Reg. No. B1-2780), and SMA GOLD 3 (NAFDAC Reg. No. B1-2781).
