Tennessee Governor Bill Lee has proposed renaming Nashville International Airport in honour of legendary country music star Dolly Parton, who died this week at the age of 80.
Lee announced the proposal on Friday, describing Parton as a beloved Tennessee icon whose music, generosity and cultural influence have made her a symbol of the state.
The governor said it was fitting for the airport, which serves Nashville — the heart of America’s country music industry — to carry Parton’s name and welcome visitors to Tennessee.
The proposal, however, is subject to an approval process and is expected to be considered at a Metro Nashville Airport Authority meeting next month.
If approved, the renaming would serve as a lasting tribute to Parton’s extraordinary contribution to music and her enduring connection to Tennessee.
