The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has imposed a ₦6 million fine on Saudi Airlines for breaching consumer protection regulations.
The sanction, announced by the NCAA’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Chris Achimugu, followed what the regulator described as multiple consumer protection-related infractions by the airline.
Achimugu explained that the authority had previously intervened to prevent unrest involving the airline at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, and had also granted Saudi Airlines additional time to resolve outstanding complaints and comply with the Civil Aviation Authority’s determinations.
According to him, the penalty became necessary to enforce compliance with Part 19 of the NCAA Regulations 2023, which protects the rights of air passengers in Nigeria.
He expressed hope that the sanction would encourage the airline to significantly improve its operations in Nigeria, stressing that passengers travelling to and from the country deserve to be treated with respect and enjoy adequate consumer protection.
Despite the enforcement action, Achimugu reaffirmed the NCAA’s commitment to supporting Saudi Airlines and other carriers in achieving efficient and compliant operations while ensuring passengers receive quality service.
