The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has commenced a review of interconnection rates for telecom operators, a move that could result in higher call and SMS tariffs for consumers across the country.
Interconnection rates determine the fees telecom operators pay one another when subscribers make calls across different networks. The current rate of N3.90 per minute has remained unchanged since 2018.
Speaking at a stakeholders’ forum, industry experts noted that significant economic changes, including naira devaluation, rising inflation, and increased energy costs, have substantially altered the operating environment for telecom companies over the past eight years.
According to the NCC, the review is aimed at ensuring that interconnection rates accurately reflect current market realities while supporting continued investment in telecommunications infrastructure. The commission also noted that emerging technologies such as 5G and Artificial Intelligence are reshaping industry cost structures.
If approved, the revised rates could lead to increased charges for voice calls and SMS services, affecting millions of telecom subscribers nationwide.
The outcome of the review will be determined after consultations with stakeholders across the telecommunications sector.
