The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Kano Strategic Command, has vowed to intensify its crackdown on individuals using social media and other public platforms to promote or sell illicit drugs.
The warning followed the conviction and sentencing of 28-year-old Ashiru Idris, who was jailed for seven years without the option of a fine by the Federal High Court in Kano for advertising cannabis sativa for sale on social media.
According to the NDLEA, Justice S. M. Shuaibu of Federal High Court No. 1, Kano, found Idris guilty after he was prosecuted for publicly promoting cannabis through a viral video shared on his social media account.
The agency’s Kano spokesperson, Assistant Superintendent of Narcotics (ASN) Sadiq Muhammad Maigatari, described the judgment as a significant step in the fight against drug trafficking and substance abuse.
Maigatari warned that the NDLEA would continue to monitor both physical and digital spaces, using intelligence and technology to identify, arrest, and prosecute individuals involved in the promotion, sale, or distribution of illicit substances.
He urged parents, community leaders, religious organisations, and members of the public to support the agency by providing credible information that can help combat drug-related activities.
