Rescue teams in Nepal and China are racing against time to locate nearly 3,000 people still missing after devastating floods and landslides swept through parts of the Himalayan region.
Latest figures from both countries put the death toll at 633, with hundreds of victims still unaccounted for and fears that some bodies may have been carried downstream into India.
Nepal’s disaster authorities said 933 hydropower workers have been added to the missing persons list, alongside trekkers, pilgrims and other residents caught in the disaster.
The floods and landslides have caused widespread destruction, sweeping away settlements and disrupting major infrastructure projects. The Red Cross estimates that up to 93,000 people may have been affected, warning that the death toll could rise further.
Rescue operations have been complicated by the threat of additional flooding. Nepali authorities warned rescuers to move to safer areas following reports of another dam breach on the Tibetan side of the border.
In Nepal, the military has been working to rescue people trapped inside tunnels at the Trishuli 3A hydropower project. More than 350 workers and residents have reportedly been brought to safety, while efforts continue to reach those still trapped.
Nepal recorded 626 deaths and 2,426 missing persons, while authorities in Tibet reported seven deaths and 554 people missing. Indian authorities have also recovered seven bodies from rivers flowing from Nepal.
