The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has relieved Super Falcons head coach Justin Madugu and members of his technical crew of their duties following the team’s disappointing outing at the recently concluded 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
The decision was approved by the NFF Executive Committee after the Super Falcons were eliminated at the quarter-final stage of the tournament. The team also suffered a major setback in their bid to qualify for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup, losing their playoff qualifier against South Africa.
Confirming the development in a brief statement on its official X account, the NFF directed Madugu and his technical crew to step down with immediate effect.
“The Executive Committee of the Nigeria Football Federation has asked members of the technical crew of the @NGSuper_Falcons to step down with immediate effect,” the federation stated.
Madugu had previously led the Super Falcons to their 10th WAFCON title, but their campaign for an 11th crown was overshadowed by concerns over preparations, internal team issues and inconsistent performances during the tournament in Morocco.
The coach was first appointed as interim head coach in September 2024 before signing a two-year contract in October 2025, following his success at the WAFCON.
His departure brings an end to his tenure with the nine-time African champions as the NFF begins the search for a new technical direction for the Super Falcons.
