Nigeria and the Republic of Benin have renewed their commitment to deepening bilateral cooperation as Nigeria’s newly appointed Ambassador to Benin, Ambassador Mopelola Adeola-Ibrahim, formally assumed office after presenting her Letters of Credence to Benin’s President, Romuald Wadagni.
The presentation ceremony, held at the Palais de la Marina in Cotonou on Friday, July 10, marked the official commencement of Ambassador Adeola-Ibrahim’s diplomatic mandate as Nigeria’s Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the Republic of Benin.
According to Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the engagement between the ambassador and President Wadagni focused on strengthening relations between the two neighbouring countries, with discussions centred on economic cooperation, security collaboration, energy partnerships, and regional integration.
Key areas highlighted during the talks included the early convening of the next session of the Nigeria–Benin Joint National Commission on Bilateral Cooperation, expansion of private sector-driven investments, improved intelligence sharing, and the advancement of shared strategic interests.
The ministry described the diplomatic engagement as a reflection of the longstanding friendship between Nigeria and Benin, reaffirming both countries’ commitment to promoting mutual development, stronger economic ties, and peaceful regional cooperation.
The Federal Government expressed optimism that the renewed partnership would further enhance collaboration in critical sectors, including trade, security, energy, and regional integration.
Ambassador Adeola-Ibrahim’s posting follows President Bola Tinubu’s approval in March 2026 for the deployment of newly appointed ambassadors to various countries and multilateral organisations after their confirmation in December 2025.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs later inducted the ambassadors and high commissioners-designate in May as part of preparations for their diplomatic assignments.
