Team Nigeria has arrived in Glasgow for its 20th Commonwealth Games appearance with an ambitious target of winning 20 gold medals, surpassing its record-breaking performance at the Birmingham Games four years ago.
A 72-member contingent will compete in 10 sports, including athletics, boxing, weightlifting, para-powerlifting, swimming, judo, track cycling, 3×3 basketball, para-athletics and wheelchair basketball, during the Games scheduled for July 23 to August 2.
Leading Nigeria’s medal quest are world record holder Tobi Amusan, sprint sensation Kanyinsola Ajayi, reigning Commonwealth para-powerlifting champion Folashade Oluwafemiayo, African record holder Chukwuebuka Enekwechi and Rita Ferdinand, who recently equalled the women’s world record in para-powerlifting.
Team Nigeria will also welcome Patricia Mbata, who makes her Commonwealth Games debut after switching allegiance to Nigeria, while Ruth Usoro steps in for long jump star Ese Brume, who misses the competition.
Having won just one silver medal at its debut in Auckland in 1950, Nigeria is aiming to make history in Glasgow with its strongest medal chase yet.
