Nigeria is set to begin the rollout of a new National Digital Alphanumeric Postcode System on October 1, 2026, replacing the country’s decades-old six-digit postcode system.
The new system will assign individual buildings unique, machine-readable location codes, aimed at improving the accuracy and reliability of Nigeria’s addressing system.
According to NIPOST, poor addressing currently costs the economy an estimated N50 billion to N80 billion annually through missed and failed deliveries.
Beyond postal and delivery services, the new digital postcode is expected to serve as a location layer for e-commerce, banking, emergency response, identity verification and government services.
The initiative is expected to strengthen Nigeria’s digital infrastructure and make it easier to accurately locate homes, businesses and public facilities.
