Ahead of the upcoming 2027 general elections, youth leaders in Lagos State are urging young Nigerians to move beyond online activism and armchair criticism to become active drivers of participatory democracy and grassroots governance.
Speaking on the programme, The Conversation, Adedotun Kolejo, Senior Special Assistant on Youth Affairs to the Chairman of Igbogbo-Baiyeku LCDA, and Taiwo Anuoluwapo, Coordinator of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) Ikorodu West Branch, emphasized that demographic strength alone will not translate into tangible political influence unless young citizens engage directly with the democratic process.
Both leaders underscored that meaningful democratic involvement extends far beyond casting a ballot on election day. Kolejo challenged young people to step up into leadership roles within their local communities without waiting for formal appointments or political patronage, noting that true leadership begins with preparation, constructive civic engagement, and the offering of practical solutions rather than merely complaining about systemic failures. She highlighted how functional youth councils, active student unions, and targeted vocational and educational programs in divisions like Ikorodu are demonstrating the tangible power of grassroots organization.
Addressing the limits of modern civic engagement, Anuoluwapo cautioned that social media commentary and digital outrage cannot substitute for real-world political participation. He pointed out that online complaints carry little weight without securing a Permanent Voter Card (PVC), turning out at polling units, and actively tracking the electoral and policy implementation processes. Anuoluwapo stressed that youth must view themselves not merely as leaders of tomorrow, but as vital stakeholders in the decisions being made today, urging local councils and government institutions to institutionalize genuine youth inclusion rather than reducing young people to campaign muscle or cosmetic figureheads.
The discussion also highlighted grassroots community development as an essential entry point into broader democratic governance. Kolejo pointed to strategic partnerships with local authorities, international development bodies, and non-governmental organizations that empower youth through vocational training and mentorship, reminding young citizens that taking responsibility for community challenges, from local infrastructure needs to civic accountability, is the foundation of public service. Echoing the wisdom of Chief Obafemi Awolowo, she noted that neglecting the potential of today’s youth invites social crises tomorrow.
Dismissing the widespread voter apathy narrative that individual votes do not count, both speakers stressed that massive campaign efforts and electoral logistics prove politicians recognize the power of the electorate. They concluded with a joint call to action for Nigerian youths: acquire their voter credentials, organize within their localities, monitor governance beyond election cycles, and demand transparency from public officials to ensure the country’s dominant youth demographic translates into transformative political power.
