The National Industrial Safety Council of Nigeria (NISCN) has conferred its prestigious Senior Safety Advocate (SSA) title on the Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of the Lagos State Safety Commission, Mr. Lanre Mojola, in recognition of his contributions to occupational health, safety and environmental standards in Lagos State and Nigeria.
The award was presented by the National President of NISCN, Engr. John Obajimi, on behalf of the council. The organisation said the honour reflected Mojola’s “visionary leadership, outstanding dedication and impactful contributions” to the advancement of Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) practices.
NISCN noted that Mojola’s leadership has strengthened safety regulation, promoted a proactive safety culture and enhanced institutional capacity within the Lagos State Safety Commission. The council also disclosed that Mojola is the first recipient of the Senior Safety Advocate title and is now entitled to use the designation “SSA” before his name.
Under Mojola’s leadership, the Commission has implemented several initiatives covering occupational safety, emergency preparedness, public safety and risk management. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he led safety assessment and auditing efforts for businesses, schools, religious organisations and hospitality establishments preparing to reopen. The Commission subsequently introduced safety protocols and registration procedures to ensure compliance with prescribed safety standards.
The Commission has also adopted the 4Es framework — Evaluation, Education, Engagement and Enforcement — as part of its approach to identifying hazards, educating stakeholders, engaging communities and enforcing safety regulations across both formal and informal sectors.
In the liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) sector, the Commission has intensified safety monitoring and training for gas retailers, cylinder handlers and plant operators, with particular emphasis on preventing gas explosions and fire incidents. Similar interventions have been extended to schools through safety awareness campaigns, emergency preparedness programmes, fire drills and risk assessments.
Safety sensitisation programmes have also targeted artisans and workers in the informal sector, including market operators, mechanics, transport workers and construction personnel. The Commission has promoted professional safety training aimed at improving workplace safety knowledge among operational staff, managers and executives.
The Commission has continued to carry out inspections and risk assessments at high-risk locations such as construction sites, industrial facilities, event venues and commercial establishments. Facilities found to be operating outside established safety requirements are subjected to appropriate enforcement measures.
Its safety interventions also cover food establishments and public events, where hygiene, emergency preparedness, crowd management and other safety requirements are monitored. During festive periods, the Commission collaborates with emergency response and fire authorities to intensify safety campaigns in major commercial centres.
At the community level, the Commission has promoted emergency preparedness through initiatives focused on cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), first aid and basic emergency-response skills.
The conferment of the SSA title, NISCN said, recognises Mojola’s continued role in advancing safety advocacy, regulatory compliance and a stronger safety culture through the Lagos State Safety Commission.
