The National Sports Commission (NSC) has cancelled the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) electoral congress scheduled for September 27 in Lafia, Nasarawa State, as part of plans to reorganise the country’s football governing body.
The decision is expected to affect the Ibrahim Gusau-led NFF executive committee, which was preparing for another term in office. The NSC is also reportedly planning to establish a three-month normalisation committee to oversee the affairs of Nigerian football and prepare the ground for a fresh NFF election.
The move follows Nigeria’s failure to secure a place at the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup, after the Super Falcons were eliminated by South Africa in the African playoff in Morocco. The development has further intensified concerns over the management and development of football in the country.
The proposed normalisation committee is expected to address outstanding issues surrounding the NFF electoral process and create the framework for a new election. The NSC is reportedly expected to announce the committee soon, although its membership and leadership had not been officially disclosed at the time of the report.
