The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Adamawa State Command, has arrested 10 secondary school graduates over their alleged involvement in a banned final-year celebration popularly known as “Signed Out.”
In a statement issued on Friday by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, DSC Nyako Amidu Baba, the suspects were accused of engaging in activities that constituted public nuisance and threatened public order.
According to the statement, operatives of the Safe School Response Squad acted on intelligence reports linking students from Capital School, GDSS Demsawo, Doubelli and Damilu to disruptive activities, including painting their bodies, tearing school uniforms, fighting on the streets, and other acts capable of causing unrest.
The Command noted that the celebration had become a growing concern for parents, school authorities and the general public, prompting the Adamawa State Ministry of Education to ban the practice last year.
The NSCDC further disclosed that this year’s celebration reportedly took a more dangerous turn, with allegations that some participants dressed in suspicious outfits and robbed members of the public of mobile phones and other valuables.
During the operation, officers discovered that one of the suspects wearing a school uniform was not a student, while some of those arrested were not final-year students but were in SS1 and SS2.
State Commandant, CC Nasiru Saleh, has ordered a thorough investigation to identify all those involved and determine the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
He reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to preventing acts capable of disrupting academic activities, threatening public safety, or endangering students and residents.
The Commandant also directed the Safe School Response Squad to strengthen collaboration with school authorities and other stakeholders to enhance preventive measures and maintain a safe learning environment.
The NSCDC said it is working with relevant school authorities to verify the identities of all students and individuals connected to the incident.
