The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has commenced an investigation into the runway excursion involving an Enugu Air Embraer E170 aircraft at Benin Airport, Edo State.
The aircraft, operating as Flight 4264 (registration 5N-ENR) from Lagos to Benin, overshot the end of Runway 05while landing at approximately 3:10 p.m. on Thursday.
According to the NSIB, the aircraft was carrying 63 passengers and five crew members, all of whom were safely evacuated without injuries.
The Bureau disclosed that its Go Team arrived at the scene within minutes of the incident and has begun gathering evidence, interviewing the flight crew and relevant personnel, inspecting the aircraft, assessing runway conditions, and reviewing operational and technical records to determine the cause of the occurrence.
NSIB Director-General, Capt. Alex Badeh Jr., expressed relief that no lives were lost or injuries recorded, while stressing that every runway excursion is treated as a serious safety occurrence requiring a comprehensive and independent investigation.
He urged the public to avoid speculation and allow investigators to carry out their work in line with international aviation safety standards.
The Bureau also confirmed that the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) and other relevant aviation agencies have been notified, while the aircraft has been secured for investigation.
A preliminary report is expected within 30 days, with a final report and safety recommendations to be released after the investigation is concluded.
Meanwhile, Enugu Air assured passengers that all occupants were safely evacuated and warned that the incident could lead to temporary adjustments to some flight schedules. The airline said affected passengers would be contacted directly and provided with the necessary assistance.
