Martin Ødegaard struck in the 75th minute to hand Arsenal a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Napoli in their Champions League league-phase opener at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona.
The Arsenal captain curled a superb left-footed effort from outside the box into the far corner, with substitute Christos Tzolis providing the assist. The goal capped a dominant display from the Gunners, who controlled possession and registered more than 20 shots.
Arsenal created several clear opportunities but were unable to extend their lead, while Napoli struggled to seriously threaten a well-organised defence. David Raya was rarely tested as Arsenal secured a valuable clean sheet away from home.
The victory gives Mikel Arteta’s side a perfect start to their European campaign following last season’s runners-up finish and extends their unbeaten start across all competitions.
