Sixteen-year-old Nigerian fencer Oghenegaren Esiovwa-Thompson has made history after becoming the first Nigerian to win a gold medal at the Commonwealth Fencing Championships.
Esiovwa-Thompson achieved the feat in the men’s U-23 epee event at Rugby School Nigeria in Atlantic City, Lagos, where he produced a dominant performance to defeat India’s Asian champion, Lokesh Vemani, 15–5 in Sunday’s final.
The victory marks a significant milestone for fencing in Nigeria, as Esiovwa-Thompson becomes the first Nigerian athlete to win a medal at the Commonwealth Fencing Championships.
His gold medal also makes him the first Nigerian fencer to secure a gold medal at an international fencing competition, further highlighting the growing potential of the sport in the country.
The teenager’s historic achievement is expected to inspire greater interest and investment in fencing while providing a major boost to Nigeria’s presence on the international fencing stage.
