Former Ogun State House of Representatives member Kayode Oladele has commended First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu for launching the Southwest Zonal National Community Food Bank Programme in Ogun State.
Oladele described the initiative as a demonstration of compassionate leadership and a commitment to supporting vulnerable Nigerians, while urging the Federal Government to make the programme a permanent part of the country’s food security and social protection system.
The APC chieftain said the launch in Abeokuta reflected the First Lady’s understanding of the challenges facing ordinary Nigerians and her efforts to provide meaningful support to households in need.
As part of the Southwest rollout, three community food banks were inaugurated in Sagamu, Yewa North and Abeokuta South, with food items distributed to vulnerable and indigent residents.
Oladele said institutionalising the programme would create a sustainable system for supporting vulnerable households while strengthening Nigeria’s food security framework.
He suggested that the government could purchase grains and other essential food commodities from farmers and agricultural cooperatives during periods of abundant harvest, store them in strategically located facilities and distribute them when needed.
According to him, such a system could provide a reliable market for farmers, reduce post-harvest losses, strengthen strategic food reserves and improve the government’s response to food shortages.
Oladele also commended Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun for the launch of the 108-unit Muhammadu Buhari Estate in Kobape and the Gateway Medical Centre of Excellence, describing the housing and healthcare projects as significant contributions to the state’s development.
