Super Eagles midfielder Frank Onyeka has celebrated a major career milestone after winning the English Championship title with Coventry City.
Coventry City sealed the championship in emphatic fashion with a 5-1 victory over Portsmouth at the Coventry Building Society Arena, a result that capped a dominant season for the Sky Blues. Onyeka featured for over an hour in the match, helping his side build a commanding three-goal lead before being substituted by manager Frank Lampard.
Coventry had already secured promotion to the English Premier League the previous week, ending a 25-year absence from the top flight. The title-clinching match saw Haji Wright open the scoring in the first half before Coventry overwhelmed Portsmouth after the break.
Ephron Mason-Clark doubled the lead, followed by an own goal from Regan Poole to make it 3-0. Mason-Clark added his second, while substitute Kaine Kesler-Hayden completed the rout with a composed finish for a 5-1 scoreline, sparking celebrations among more than 32,000 home fans.
The triumph marks Coventry’s first-ever Championship title and their second league title in the lower divisions of English football. For Onyeka, who is on loan from Brentford, it represents his first trophy in English football and the fourth title of his career. He also joins a list of Nigerian players who have previously won the Championship.
In contrast, it was a disastrous campaign for Leicester City, who have been relegated from the Championship to League One. The former Premier League champions and 2021 FA Cup winners finished 23rd on the table with 42 points, seven points adrift of safety with just two matches remaining.
The relegation marks another low point in Leicester’s recent decline, coming less than a decade after their historic Premier League triumph in the 2015/16 season and 17 years after their last spell in the third tier.
