The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has deployed Deputy Inspector-General of Police, DIG Ishyaku Mohammed, to Osun State to coordinate security operations ahead of the governorship election scheduled for Saturday, August 15, 2026.
The Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Aniete Iniedu, said the deployment is part of the Nigeria Police Force’s strategy to ensure a peaceful, secure and credible election across the state.
DIG Mohammed will oversee the police component of the election security arrangement and collaborate with other security agencies under the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security.
He will be supported by Assistant Inspectors-General and Commissioners of Police deployed across the three senatorial districts to strengthen intelligence-led operations and ensure swift responses to emerging threats.
The police said adequate measures have been put in place to protect voters, INEC officials, election materials, polling units, collation centres, accredited observers and media practitioners before, during and after the election.
The IGP warned political actors, supporters and other troublemakers against ballot snatching, voter intimidation, political thuggery and other electoral offences, stressing that offenders would face immediate arrest and prosecution.
Disu also reiterated the ban on armed escorts, security aides and unauthorised persons accompanying political figures or VIPs to polling units and collation centres on election day.
The police further warned that state-established security outfits, quasi-security groups and private security organisations are prohibited from taking part in election security duties.
The Force urged residents and eligible voters to exercise their civic rights peacefully, assuring them of adequate security while reaffirming its commitment to professionalism, neutrality, respect for human rights and the protection of the electoral process.
