The Muslim community in Oyo State has strongly condemned the Sharia-related demands reportedly made by terrorists holding abducted teachers and pupils, stressing that the criminals do not represent Islam or the values of the Muslim faithful.
In a statement jointly signed by its Chairman, Alhaji Ishaq Sanvni, and Secretary-General, Alhaji Murisiku Siyanbade, the community described the kidnappers’ actions as criminal, inhumane, and completely contrary to the teachings of Islam.
The group said any attempt by the abductors to justify their activities using religious narratives amounts to a gross misrepresentation of the Islamic faith.
According to the statement, Islam unequivocally condemns kidnapping, terrorism, violence, and the exploitation of innocent people for personal gain. It noted that genuine Sharia principles promote justice, peace, compassion, and the sanctity of human life—values that stand in direct opposition to the actions of terrorist groups.
“Terrorists do not represent Islamic values and cannot speak on behalf of Muslims,” the organisation stated.
The community further emphasized that the protection of human life remains a fundamental principle of Islam, citing relevant teachings from the Holy Qur’an that uphold the dignity and security of every individual.
It called on security agencies to intensify rescue efforts and ensure the safe release of those still being held captive.
The statement also urged the public not to associate the actions of criminal elements with any religion, warning that such narratives could deepen division and misunderstanding within society.
Meanwhile, concern continues to grow over the welfare and safety of the abducted victims, with community leaders and residents appealing to authorities to take all necessary measures to secure their freedom.
The Muslim community reaffirmed its support for efforts aimed at restoring peace and security, while calling for unity among Nigerians in rejecting violence, extremism, and all forms of criminality.
