The Paraguayan government has publicly distanced itself from racist remarks made by Senator Celeste Amarilla against France captain Kylian Mbappé following Paraguay’s elimination from the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
In a statement issued on Monday, Paraguay’s Foreign Ministry condemned the senator’s comments, saying they run contrary to the country’s values of respect, dignity, and peaceful coexistence.
“The remarks made by Senator Celeste Amarilla, directed at the captain of the French national team, Kylian Mbappé, are contrary to the values and principles that inspire peaceful coexistence and respect for human dignity, which our country promotes,” the ministry said.
The backlash follows France’s 1-0 victory over Paraguay in the Round of 16, with Mbappé scoring the decisive penalty that secured Les Bleus’ place in the quarter-finals.
After the match, Amarilla sparked outrage by posting racist comments targeting the Real Madrid forward, prompting widespread condemnation from French officials, football fans, and anti-racism advocates.
Mbappé responded by describing the senator as “despicable” and “not worthy” of holding public office, insisting that her comments did not represent the people of Paraguay.
The incident has reignited global conversations about racism in football and the responsibility of public officials to uphold respect and inclusivity.
