The Nigeria Police Force has deployed 15,000 personnel to provide security for the August 15 Osun State governorship election as part of efforts to ensure a peaceful, free and credible poll.
The Commissioner of Police in charge of the election, Samuel Etaifo, disclosed this while addressing officers deployed for the exercise in Osogbo. He said the security team comprises conventional police officers, tactical units, the Police Mobile Force, dog section and medical personnel.
Etaifo also revealed that a Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) and an Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) would oversee the security operation, adding that his early deployment to the state was necessitated by heightened security concerns.
The police chief warned that anyone who attempts to disrupt the election or violate electoral laws would be arrested and prosecuted. He further disclosed that all suspects arrested during the election would be transferred to Abuja for further investigation, stressing that the governorship election is a matter of national importance.
He also urged officers to conduct themselves professionally, remain impartial and operate strictly within the provisions of the law throughout the electoral process.
