Renowned Premier League referee Anthony Taylor has announced his retirement from professional officiating, bringing an end to a distinguished 20-year career during which he officiated 831 matches, including 432 Premier League games.
The 47-year-old confirmed his decision on Tuesday, saying the relentless pressure and constant public scrutiny faced by top-level referees influenced his decision to step away from the game.
Taylor’s final assignment came earlier this month when he officiated Spain’s 1-0 victory over Portugal in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Promoted to the Premier League referees’ list in 2010, Taylor went on to officiate at the 2022 and 2026 FIFA World Cups, as well as the UEFA European Championships in 2020 and 2024, earning widespread recognition as one of football’s most experienced match officials.
He was widely commended for his calm handling of the Euro 2020 match between Denmark and Finland after Danish midfielder Christian Eriksen suffered a cardiac arrest on the pitch.
Reflecting on his career, Taylor described officiating at the highest level as a privilege but acknowledged the intense pressure and constant scrutiny that come with the role.
He thanked his family and friends for their unwavering support throughout a career that demanded significant personal sacrifice, adding that he is ready to embrace the next chapter of his professional journey.
