President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will deliver a nationwide broadcast at 7:00 a.m. on Friday, June 12, 2026, as Nigeria commemorates this year’s Democracy Day.
The announcement was made in a statement issued on Thursday by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
According to the statement, the presidential address will be broadcast live on the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) and the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN), with all television and radio stations across the country directed to relay the transmission.
“President Bola Tinubu will deliver a national address on Friday, June 12, in commemoration of Democracy Day. The speech is scheduled to air on the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) network and the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN) at 7:00 a.m. All television and radio stations are requested to link up with the broadcast,” the statement said.
The President’s address comes as Nigerians reflect on the nation’s democratic journey and the progress made since the return to civilian rule. It also comes amid growing public concern over security challenges in parts of the country, including recent incidents of kidnapping and violence.
Earlier on Thursday, the Federal Government declared Friday, June 12, 2026, a public holiday to mark Democracy Day.
The declaration, announced by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, described June 12 as a defining moment in Nigeria’s democratic history and a tribute to the resilience and sacrifices of citizens who fought for democratic governance.
Democracy Day commemorates the historic June 12, 1993 presidential election, widely regarded as the freest and fairest election in Nigeria’s history. The election is believed to have been won by the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (MKO) Abiola before its annulment by the military government, an action that triggered widespread protests and intensified the struggle for democratic rule.
In 2018, former President Muhammadu Buhari officially moved Nigeria’s Democracy Day celebration from May 29 to June 12 in recognition of the significance of the 1993 election and the sacrifices of pro-democracy activists.
As the nation marks another Democracy Day, attention will be focused on President Tinubu’s message, which is expected to address key national issues and outline the administration’s vision for strengthening democratic governance, national unity, and development.
