Real Sociedad claimed Copa del Rey glory after defeating Atletico Madrid 4-3 on penalties following a thrilling 2-2 draw in Saturday’s final in Seville.
The Basque side struck almost immediately, with Ander Barrenetxea heading home after just 14 seconds—the fastest goal ever in a Copa del Rey final. Atletico responded through Ademola Lookman, who fired in a composed finish after being set up by Antoine Griezmann.
Mikel Oyarzabal restored Real Sociedad’s lead from the penalty spot before halftime, but Julian Alvarez levelled the contest with a brilliant strike in the second half to force extra time.
Both teams created chances in a tense additional period, but neither could find a winner, sending the match into a penalty shootout. Real Sociedad held their nerve, with goalkeeper Unai Marrero making crucial saves, including denying Alexander Sorloth and Alvarez.
