Esther Nworgu delivered Team Nigeria’s first gold medal at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, smashing the Games record twice to clinch the women’s para powerlifting lightweight title.
The 24-year-old opened the competition with a successful 118kg lift, earning 114.1 points to set a new Games record. She then surpassed her own mark less than 10 minutes later with a winning lift of 123kg, scoring 119 points to secure the gold medal.
In recognition of her outstanding achievement, the National Sports Commission (NSC) rewarded Nworgu with an instant $5,000 cash prize at the venue and an additional $5,000 paid directly into her account, bringing her total reward to $10,000.
Nworgu’s victory marks Team Nigeria’s first gold medal of the Games and provides a strong start to the country’s para powerlifting campaign in Glasgow.
