The House of Representatives has commenced clause-by-clause consideration of President Bola Tinubu’s Executive Billseeking the establishment of state police, signalling a major step toward reforming Nigeria’s security architecture.
The House Committee on Constitution Review began deliberations on the bill on Monday, describing it as a priority initiative aimed at addressing the country’s growing security challenges through constitutional amendment.
The development follows last week’s decision by the House to withdraw its earlier State Police Bill and adopt the Executive Bill transmitted by the President, a move expected to fast-track the legislative process by aligning with the version already passed by the Senate.
If adopted, the decision will eliminate the need to harmonise separate House and Senate proposals, allowing lawmakers to focus on advancing the President’s bill as part of ongoing constitutional reforms.
