The House of Representatives has called for a comprehensive assessment of the losses suffered by Nigerians affected by recent xenophobic attacks in South Africa, with a view to securing compensation and strengthening protection for citizens living abroad.
The resolution followed the adoption of a motion sponsored by the member representing Ikorodu Federal Constituency, Babajimi Benson, during Tuesday’s plenary presided over by Speaker Abbas Tajudeen.
The lawmakers mandated the House Committees on Diaspora and Foreign Affairs to document casualties, human and economic losses, compile an inventory of abandoned properties, and recommend diplomatic and legal measures to safeguard Nigerians residing in South Africa.
The House also urged the Federal Government to intensify diplomatic engagement with South Africa, pursue legal avenues where necessary, and strengthen bilateral cooperation to ensure the safety and protection of Nigerians in the country.
Lawmakers maintained that a thorough assessment of the impact of the attacks is essential to support affected victims, facilitate compensation, and improve Nigeria’s response to similar incidents in the future.
Meanwhile, the House also considered a motion seeking a comprehensive audit of all seized, forfeited, and recovered assets since May 29, 1999, while receiving the Constitution Review Committee’s report on the proposed establishment of state police.
In addition, the House Ad Hoc Committee investigating the Presidential Foreign Investment Promotion Council (PFIPC) criticised the absence of some heads of Ministries, Departments, and Agencies at its investigative hearing, warning that officials who fail to honour legislative summons may face further action.
