The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has announced plans to embark on a nationwide strike and protests beginning Monday, January 12, 2026.
The decision was reached during an emergency National Executive Council (E-NEC) meeting held on January 2, following what the association described as the government’s continued failure to fully address the long-standing welfare and professional concerns of resident doctors.
In a statement signed by the NARD President, Dr. Muhammad Suleiman, the association said the strike action would commence at 12:00 a.m. on January 12.
According to the statement, the NEC expressed dissatisfaction with the pace and extent of government responses to key demands affecting resident doctors across the country, prompting the decision to resume industrial action.
As part of preparations for the strike, the council directed all 91 NARD centres nationwide to convene congress meetings. These meetings are to be followed by press conferences aimed at sensitising the public to the issues behind the planned action.
NARD said the protests are intended to draw national attention to unresolved matters impacting healthcare delivery and the welfare of resident doctors, while urging authorities to urgently intervene to avert a disruption of medical services across the country.
